A natural way of working

“I have several employees with disabilities working in various roles within the company. For me, employing disabled people is a natural way of working — if they can do the job, that’s all that matters.”

An accident leading to a new professional future

“Twenty years ago, one of my employees, who worked as a driver for my company while studying, was involved in a work-related car accident, after which he became paraplegic. I then faced a real challenge. I felt partly responsible for what happened to him, as I would never fire someone just because they were experiencing difficulties. In fact, I had planned to offer Mr Zimmermann a professional future within the
company, as I would with any other employee. How could I solve this? It was quite simple: I offered Mr Zimmermann a job in the office.”

Just a bit more space

“That worked out quite well. Mr Zimmermann studied economics, so the office job matched his skills. We adjusted the office to accommodate his needs, making it wheelchair accessible. This meant wider aisles and furniture arranged to suit his needs. He was satisfied with the adaptations to his workplace. He now works like everyone else in the company. His colleagues, who had known him first as a driver for the company, coped well with his changed situation and offered help. He has become an important part of the team.”

Financial support

“I wasn’t sure if I would receive any state support, so I contacted the Chamber of Industry and Commerce and the Integration Office. They made it clear that I would receive support. I received comprehensive support in applying for state funding to convert the workplace, as well as support and advice for Mr Zimmermann. I am very satisfied with the support he received. Fortunately, the support needed was minimal in terms of time or money.”

More consideration

“Since employing people with disabilities, I have noticed a difference in attitude. They have become more considerate and pay more attention to each other.
Having people with disabilities employed in the company makes everyone feel good. They know that I am an employer who does not leave anyone behind and who gives people in difficult situations a chance.”

It’s all about the match

“Having Mr Zimmerman as an example made me realise that people with disabilities can be just as productive as any other employee. This is as long as the match between the job and the person is carried out well. I would recommend that my fellow entrepreneurs just do it. If you’re feeling insecure, get in touch with your local Chamber of Industry and Commerce and any service provider for jobseekers with disabilities. They will support you with everything you need. Do not hesitate to ask for support for everyone involved: the supervisor, colleagues and yourself as ‘the boss’, as it is crucial for all of you.”
